I...Thanks for this powerful and thoughtful post.

I stood at the kitchen sink just now thinking about how strange it is that I should have gone to a conference in Brighton England four weeks ago now, a conference on autobiograhy and biogaphy (IABA) and hear one of the keynotes, Lauren Berlant speak on the subject of 'intimate publics'.

After I came home to Australia I contacted Lauren first via her blog in 'public' and she emailed me back 'privately' and we began a brief correspondence.

I told her of my work, she tried to help me to understand hers better, and she sent me some papers that she thought might be helpful for me. One from her book, the first chapter of The Female Complaint, the second Brooke Hopkin's paper 'A Question of Child Sexual Abuse' and the third, a paper by susie Orbach, her 2003 John Bowlby Memorial Lecture, called 'There is no such thing as a body'.

Three powerful pieces of writing, but it was Brooke's essay that has captivated me such that I wanted to find the author if he were still around.

I found him through this blog only to discover that his life has changed so radically.

This beautiful post seems to form a bridge between all three of these papers, particularly Brooke's and Susie Orbach's on bodies and love

Then I think of John Bowlby's work on attachment.

Here in this post you write about love. Thank you for such wonderful writing, such vivid and life affirming ideas even in the face of tragedy and pain. I am very pleased to have met you both, Peggy and Brooke through this blog.Elisabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04015624747225433940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569355678882263943.post-41536025390426129082010-07-31T20:04:16.501-07:002010-07-31T20:04:16.501-07:00That's a wonderful posting, Brooke and Peggy, ...That's a wonderful posting, Brooke and Peggy, a good, true working concept, and a powerful reuniting with your friend, so glad he could spend some time with you, as I'm sure it affirmed some important things for him. One of my own dear memories is of visiting a teacher of design who had helped me get going many years ago with my own work in Peru, who, also stricken with L Gehrig's, was bedridden when I got to see him. Just being there with him was so important, with just a few words mean so much for both for him and me - I will carry it with me always.

Now you are facing the huge challenge - preparing mentally and house-wise for the move home. I'm sure each day brings new things so far unthought of, to rationalize, but it is a process, and yours is a forward going one, and once you get over this one, there will be so many new references and enjoyments to share with so many who will come to be with you, me included .

It's thundering again here at Chaquaco, the prairie is incredibly green after a week of rain off and on - wonderful, refreshing - indications of how bountiful our semi-arid regions can sometimes be, perhaps how it once was so long ago.

Thinking of you Brooke, courage, be in touch soon,
love to you both
Eded ranneyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08812699214773024241noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569355678882263943.post-40771989205111343332010-07-31T20:03:41.315-07:002010-07-31T20:03:41.315-07:00That's a wonderful posting, Brooke and Peggy, ...That's a wonderful posting, Brooke and Peggy, a good, true working concept, and a powerful reuniting with your friend, so glad he could spend some time with you, as I'm sure it affirmed some important things for him.
